FAQ
01Will I get a tax receipt for my donation?
Not yet. We are currently applying for CRA charity status. Once approved, we will issue tax receipts and support early donors retroactively. In the meantime, donations are tracked and receipts from our recycling partners are retained for audit purposes.
02How does scrap pickup work?
Fill in the Donate Scrap form with your location, the type of material, how it's packaged, and whether you can help load it. We coordinate with a recycler in your area and arrange the pickup window with you directly.
03Is there a minimum amount of scrap?
No minimum. A single retired rope or a handful of shackles is worth submitting — we'd rather route small lots through the program than see them scrapped anonymously. Larger loads get priority scheduling.
04Who pays for the pickup?
We coordinate with recycling partners who typically handle local pickup as part of our arrangement. For out-of-region or oversized loads, we'll confirm any logistics cost with you before scheduling — there are no surprise charges to donors.
05How do sponsorship payments work?
Until CRA charity status is granted, we coordinate sponsorships by email. Once you reach out, we'll confirm payment method, recognition preferences, and how the tax treatment will work retroactively after charity status. No online payment required today.
06What happens if CRA charity status is delayed or denied?
Donations remain tracked publicly on our leaderboard either way. If charity status is delayed, tax receipts simply arrive later. If it's denied, we'd transition the fund to a partnering registered charity so donors can still claim eligible receipts — but we consider this unlikely given our legal guidance.
07Can I apply if I live outside BC?
Yes. Scholarships are open to applicants anywhere in North America. Funds are prioritized regionally - donations from a given province or state are allocated back into that region.
08Which trades qualify?
Any heavy-lift or rigging trade - Red Seal or not. Crane Operators, Riggers, Ironworkers, Pile Drivers, Rigging Inspectors, Sling and Wire Rope Fabricators, NDT Technicians, Cable Installers, Elevator Technicians, Crane Mechanics, Cableway Splicers, and more. See the full list on Who's Eligible.
09Is this only for new entrants to the trades?
No. If you're already in the industry and want to advance - rope inspection courses, advanced rigging techniques, specialized handling - funding is available to you too.
10How often are scholarships awarded?
The first award cycle opens Fall 2026. Cadence (annual, bi-annual, rolling) will be finalized as the fund matures. Sign up on the Applications page to be notified.
11Can my donation be anonymous?
Yes. The Donate Scrap form has a consent checkbox for public recognition. If you leave it unchecked, your donation is tracked internally but does not appear on the public leaderboard or social media.
12What about non-steel rigging - synthetic slings, polyester round slings?
Reach out before arranging a pickup. Damaged or retired non-steel rigging often has value as an education sample for trade schools. We can usually find a home for it even if we're not recycling it.
13What happens to damaged rigging that's kept out of the recycling stream?
Pieces with instructional value - birdcaged rope, bent hooks, gouged shackles - are tagged, photographed, and provided to partner trade schools as real-world failure examples. Every piece we pull out of the scrap stream is documented so the audit trail stays clean.
14What's the Preferred Hiring List?
When a company donates, they can opt in to our Preferred Hiring List. That list is shared privately with scholarship graduates so they can reach out to the companies that funded their training. Full circle, from donation to employment.
